FREE WORKSHOPS

The 2010 HSCS Show and Sale will include free workshops on potting and plant care on August 14 and 15. The workshops are designed primarily to assist new cactus and succulent owners. HSCS will provide basic tools and materials, but attendance is limited.

HSCS Education Director Pam Schnebelen and other club members will lead the workshops in the Orthwein Floral Display Hall, where the Show and Sale is held. They will provide the public not only an introduction to cacti and succulents, but also a preview of the plant knowledge and advice that is shared among members during the HSCS meetings held monthly at Missouri Botanical Garden.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE:

Saturday, August 14

9 a.m.-5 p.m. -- Kids Corner
Children delight in the magic of these plants. During this hands-on workshop, kids up to the age of 12 will learn how to pot a "finger-friendly" succulent seedling to take home as a free gift from the Henry Shaw Cactus Society.

Photo11 a.m. -- Potting Your New Plants
Many new plant purchases -- particularly small starter plants -- should be repotted fairly soon. Learn how to improve your repotting success by choosing the right combination of soil mix and container.

1 p.m. -- Summer Care/Winter Care
While cacti and succulents generally enjoy summer, St. Louis summers can be less than ideal for some of them. Our winters are also much colder and darker than in the plants' native habitats. This workshop will cover ways to maximize summer growth and minimize winter loss.

Sunday, August 15

9 a.m.-5 p.m. -- Kids Corner (See description above.)

11 a.m. -- Summer Care/Winter Care (See description above.)

1 p.m. -- Potting Your New Plants (See description above.)
