Cacti and succulents of all sizes and shapes will greet visitors to Henry Shaw Cactus Society's show in July. Over 500 diverse plants from around the world will fill the Orthwein Floral Display Hall at Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition to the show, several vendors will offer thousands of starter and specimen plants for sale. One of only a few weeklong shows in the country, the HSCS show is free with garden admission.
HSCS member exhibitors will bring their best specimens to the event for display and to vie for trophies and ribbons. The show will include over 150 categories for specimen plants, as well as flowering plants, plant groupings, allied interests and educational displays. It will also feature decorative and more imaginative categories such as Kitchen Utensil, Spoon Garden, Living Picture and Sophistication.
Plants are judged on overall condition and form, presentation and, to a lesser degree, age and rarity. The Sweepstakes Award traveling trophy will be given to the person who receives the most first-place class ribbons. In addition, outstanding individual plants will receive Special Awards. After their hugely successful debut last year, several free workshops on plant potting and care will be held in the display hall August 16 and 17.
